In its belief in the importance of art for a society's development, Siemens Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş organizes an opera contest every year, aiming not only to provide incentive for young people but also to encourage an interest in art in the community. This year, the twelfth Siemens Opera Contest attracted many young artists. The preliminary eliminations were held on May 19, 20 and 21, after which three days of excitement over the outcome of the competition came to a peak when the results were announced at a gala held on the evening of May 22.
Deniz Yetim won second place in the Siemens 12th Opera Contest while the third place was shared by Alper Göçeri and Cem Beran Sertkaya. Nihan İnan was given an Honorary Mention. The artists receiving awards at the ceremony treated spectators to a mini-concert.
On the jury of the contest were State Opera and Ballet Head Director Assistant Professor Yekta Kara, State Artist Mete Uğur, General Art Director for the Dresden Opera Prof. Gerd Uecker, Achim Thorwald from the Karlsruhe Opera and Guy Montavon, General Art Director for the Erfurt Opera. The jury concurred that the young artists participating in this year's contest were extremely talented and that it was difficult to make a choice among the contestants.
The second prize-winner of the contest was awarded a six-week summer scholarship at the Salzburg Mozarteum Music Academy and a two-month complimentary enrollment at a German course at the Goethe Institut in Istanbul. The singers winning third place were given monetary awards.
As always, this year too music-lovers displayed a great interest in the Siemens Artistic Awards, which have been given out by Siemens Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. since 1993.
